International CV to US Resume: The Conversion Guide

Who this is for: Professionals moving to the US market from Europe, the UK, India, Africa, Australia, and Latin America — or applying to US companies remotely.

A CV that's perfectly professional at home can quietly disqualify you in the US. Photos, date of birth, marital status, and nationality — standard in many markets — create discrimination-liability discomfort for US recruiters. Degree titles, grading systems, and company names don't translate themselves. And the two-to-four-page academic-style CV collides with the US expectation of a tight, achievement-led one-to-two pages.

The example

Professional summary, written for this scenario

Finance manager with 9 years across Mumbai and Dubai, most recently managing a $40M P&L (converted from AED) for a 300-person distribution business. Chartered Accountant (ICAI — Indian CPA equivalent); currently authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.

Before and after, bullet by bullet

Illustrative rewrites — each uses only facts the candidate already had.

What the job asks for

US-format personal information

Before

Header with photo, date of birth, marital status, nationality, and full home address.

After

Name, city and state, phone, email, LinkedIn. Nothing else.

Why it works

US employers avoid documents containing protected-class information; some screeners discard them to avoid liability. Removing personal data isn't just convention — it protects your candidacy.

What the job asks for

Credentials a US screener can evaluate

Before

Chartered Accountant (ICAI), B.Com (Hons), First Class.

After

Chartered Accountant, ICAI (Indian CPA equivalent) · Bachelor of Commerce with Honors, University of Delhi — top 5% of class.

Why it works

Translate every credential into its nearest US equivalent and convert grades into class-rank language. The reader won't research your qualification system — do the translation for them.

What the job asks for

Achievements in US-legible scale

Before

Managed finance for a leading regional distributor (₹330 crore turnover).

After

Managed finance for a $40M-revenue distribution business (largest in its regional market), leading a team of 12 across accounting, treasury, and FP&A.

Why it works

Convert currencies to USD, explain company stature in plain terms, and add team scope. Local fame doesn't travel; scale in dollars does.

What matters most

1. Cut everything the US finds legally awkward

Photo, age, birth date, gender, marital status, religion, nationality, and full street address all come off. US resumes are anonymous by design in these dimensions.

2. Adopt achievement bullets over duty prose

Many markets favor responsibility descriptions. US screeners expect quantified outcomes per bullet: what changed because you were there.

3. State work authorization plainly if it's a strength

"Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship" in the summary removes the screener's biggest silent question. If you need sponsorship, say nothing on the resume and handle it in the application's questions.

4. US English, US date formats

Optimisation → optimization; CV → resume; 03/2024 not 24/03. Month-year date formats ("Mar 2024") avoid the ambiguity entirely.

5. Compress to two pages maximum

Publications, references, every early job, and personal interests go. Ten-plus-year careers get the same treatment as US executives: recent depth, early summary.
