Banking resumes are read in seconds by people trained to cut. The conventions are rigid: one page, deal experience quantified in transaction values, technical skills assumed rather than listed, and zero tolerance for fluff. A resume that would look strong in tech — colorful, two pages, personality — reads as a red flag on a banking desk.

What the job asks for
Transaction experience with quantified deal values

Why it works
Deal count, aggregate value, and your specific artifact. "Assisted" is the most-cut word in banking resumes — name what you personally built.
What the job asks for
Modeling and technical depth
Before
Strong financial modeling and valuation skills.
After
Built three-statement operating models, DCF, trading and transaction comps for 10+ pitches; model for a consumer-sector target was used unchanged in the final board presentation.
Why it works
Claiming a skill is worthless; naming the model types and where your work ended up is evidence. Never inflate — modeling claims are tested in interviews.
What the job asks for
Client and process exposure
Before
Participated in client meetings and due diligence.
After
Ran the data room and diligence tracker for a sell-side process with 40+ buyer requests weekly; drafted management-presentation sections delivered to 8 potential acquirers.
Why it works
Process ownership (data room, tracker, buyer lists) is what associates actually check for when screening analyst resumes.
What matters most
1. One page. No exceptions
Banking is the last industry where the one-page rule is absolute, even for associates. Cut education detail before cutting deal bullets.
2. Write a deal sheet, not a job description
Each significant transaction gets its own bullet: role, deal type, value, and your specific contribution. Confidential deals can be described generically ("$800M sell-side, consumer sector").
3. Formatting is a competence test
Consistent date formats, aligned columns, single conservative font, no color, no photo. Bankers treat sloppy formatting as evidence of sloppy models.
4. Career changers: translate, don't apologize
Big 4 due-diligence work, consulting commercial diligence, and FP&A modeling all convert into banking language. Lead with valuation and transaction exposure, however you got it.
5. GPA and school stay on the resume
Unlike most industries, banking expects GPA (if 3.5+), SAT sometimes at the analyst level, and finance coursework for career changers.
